Švarný makes the jump to the KHL

HC SLOVAN have gone a long way to finalising their defensive corps for their first season in the KHL following the contract extension of Ivan Švarný. 

Švarný, who joined HC SLOVAN in 2011 after a number of successful seasons in the Czech Extraliga, and he showed that he was a class above in the Slovak Extraliga, as he finished the season with the highest combined regular season and playoff points for defencemen, and was a key part of the HC SLOVAN side which won the Extraliga crown in 2012.

Švarný (born 30^th October 1984 in Nitra, Slovakia) will be making his first appearance in the KHL for HC SLOVAN, as the 188 cm defenceman has split most of his career between the Czech and Slovak Extraligas. Švarný, a product of Nitra’s youth system made the jump over to the Ontario Hockey League, arguably the best junior league in the world, in 2002, where he made 129 appearances for the Belleville Bulls. He made his professional debut in the Central Hockey League, one of the premier North American minor leagues, before returning to his native Slovakia. Ivan played two seasons with his hometown side, HK Nitra, where he had a two productive years, scoring 22 points in 47 games in 2006-2007. The interest in Švarný from the Czech Republic saw him make the switch to the Czech Extraliga, where he signed for HC Oceláři Třinec. Half way through the season, he moved to HC Litvinov, where he stayed until 2011. The Slovak defenceman became a key piece of their defence, and led his team to the Czech Extraliga bronze medal in 2010. 

Ivan Švarný scored almost twenty points in his three full seasons in Litvinov. Despite Czech interest, he made the move to HC SLOVAN for the 2011-2012 season where he shone in the Slovak top division, scoring 29 points (9+20) in 54 games to finish as the third top scoring defenceman in the regular season. However, Švarný shone in the playoffs, and an incredible run of 10 points in 14 games saw him as the most productive defenceman in the playoffs, and a key reason for HC SLOVAN lifting the Extraliga crown, following their seven game victory over HC Košice. 

Whilst Svarny’s career has seen him ply his trade in both the Czech and Slovak Extraligas, he has been part of the national team program. He was selected to the World Championships roster in 2009, whilst he represented his country four times during the 2011-2012 season. Although he did not make the cut for the final World Championship squad roster, Švarný has a great chance to stake a claim for a spot in Vladimir Vůjtek’s plans for the coming season.

Словацкий защитник стал важной частью защиты «Литвинова», выиграл вместе с командой бронзу чешской лиги в 2010 году. 

В каждом из трёх сезонов в «Летвинове» Иван Шварны набирал почти по 30 очков. Но потом, несмотря на интерес чехов, перешёл в ХК «Слован» и в минувшем сезоне блистал в высшем дивизионе словацкого хоккея. Набрав 29 очков в регулярном чемпионате, Иван стал третьим защитником-бомбардиром регулярки. А в плей-офф Шварны и вовсе стал самым результативным защитником, показав великолепный результат в виде 10 очков в 14-ти играх. Таким образом, Иван внёс весомый вклад в победу над «Кошице» и завоевание золотых медалей Экстралиги. 

Играя как в Чехии, так и в Словакии, Шварны привлекался в сборную Словакии. Он сыграл на Чемпионате мира в 2009 году, в четырёх матчах представлял свою страну по ходу сезона 2011-2012. Хоть Иван и не попал в окончательный состав Словакии на ЧМ-2012, у него есть шанс сыграть за национальную команду в сезонах грядущих.
