Another Slovak defenceman joins Slovan - Vladimír Mihálik

HC SLOVAN Bratislava have bolstered their defensive ranks further, as they are now able to announce the signing of former NHL and Slovak national team defenceman.

Vladimír Mihálik (born 29^th January 1985 in Prešov, Slovakia) is one of the tallest professional ice hockey players in the world, standing at a giant 202 cm, but he doesn’t just bring a big frame, but a wealth of experience from North America and the top professional leagues in Europe, as well as representing his country at a number of different levels. Mihalik joins HC SLOVAN after a season split between HC Lev Poprad in the KHL, where he played 37 games, before making the move to Elitserien side Timrå, where he played a total of 22 games, being a big part of the reason why they survived relegation from the Elitserien.
The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Mihalik with their first round pick (30^th overall) in the 2005 NHL Draft following a remarkable junior career for Prešov, and making his professional debut at the age of 17 in the 1.liga for HC Prešov 07 in the 2004-2005 season. Mihalik then went to try his luck in the WHL, one of the top junior leagues in Canada, and two solid seasons playing for the Red Deer Rebels and Prince George Cougars saw Mihalik sign a professional contract for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He represented his NHL club 15 times, scoring three assists. Mihalik was a stalwart on the defence for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, as in three seasons he appeared over 270 times for the Admirals, scoring 58 points, which is an impressive achievement for a defensive defenceman.

It has been no surprise that Mihalik has been a stalwart of the Slovakian national program during his career so far. He represented his country at both the U18 and U20 levels, scoring three points in six games during the 2006 IIHF World Junior Championships. He has also appeared for the senior national team at the 2010 IIHF World Championship in Germany, whilst appearing twelve times for his country during the 2011-2012 season. He was unfortunate to be one of the final cuts from the silver medal squad for the recent IIHF World Championships in Helsinki and Stockholm, but if he continues his fine form then he should be line for further call ups in the coming season.

Mihalik is a very good skater for a player of his size, whilst he will bring a gritty edge to the rest of HC SLOVAN’s defence, which is almost complete following the recent signings of Josef Boumedienne and David Printz. The club are delighted to welcome Mihalik, and this signing is another example of HC SLOVAN’s commitment to developing Slovak talent both in the short, and in the long term.

Владимир Михалик (родился 29.01.1985 в Прешове, Словакия) — один из самых высоких профессиональных хоккеистов в мире, его рост: 202 см. Но помимо внушительных габаритов у Михалика есть и богатый опыт игры в Северной Америке, ведущих лигах Европы и за сборную Словакии на разных уровнях. Михалик присоединяется к «Словану» после сезона, в котором он успел поиграть в двух командах. Сначала Владимир провёл 37 матчей в команде «Лев» из Попрада, а потом перешёл в шведский «Тимро», где сыграл 22 матча и внёс большой вклад в то, что команда не выбыла из Элитной серии.

На драфте НХЛ 2005 года Михалика в первом раунде (общий 30-й номер) выбрала «Тампа Бэй Лайтнинг», оценив замечательную карьеру юноши в родном Прешове, где он уже в 17 лет сыграл за взрослую команду. Михалик отправился в Западную хоккейную лигу, одну из лучших молодёжных лиг Канады, и провёл там два хороших сезона за «Ред-Дир Ребелз» и «Принс-Альберт Рейдерз», после чего подписал контракт с «Тампой». За «Тампу» он сыграл 15 раз и сделал 3 передачи. Михалик был столпом обороны команды АХЛ «Норфолк Эдмиралс», сыграв за три сезона более 270 матчей и набрав 58 очков, внушительный результат для защитника-домоседа.

Не удивительно, что Михалик часто играет за национальную команду Словакии. Он сыграл как на Юношеском, так и на Молодёжном Чемпионатах мира, на МЧМ-2006 набрал три очка в 6-ти матчах. За взрослую сборную Владимир сыграл на Чемпионате мира 2010 года в Германии, а в минувшем сезоне провёл за Словакию 12 матчей. Но, к сожалению, не попал в итоговый состав сборной на Чемпионат мира в Хельсинки и Стокгольме. Хотя, если продолжит играть хорошо и в дальнейшем, еще ни раз получит вызов в сборную.

У Михалика очень хорошее катание для его комплекции. Он добавит твёрдости обороне «Слована», которая почти сформирована, ведь недавно были подписаны еще и Йозефа Бумедьена с Дэвидом Принцем. Клуб рад приветствовать Михалика, это пополнение — пример выполнения ХК «Слован» обязательства развивать словацкие таланты в ближайшей и долгосрочной перспективе.
