Due to the significant weakening of the defensive ranks recently, the Slovan management has been attempting to bring in new strength in that area. Just a day before Christmas, an agreement to the end of the season was reached with Marek Trončinský, the most productive defenseman with Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk and one of the top 25 backs in the KHL. The new signing made his first appearance at home against Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk on December 27th.

“With Michal Sersen injured, and a tough series of games ahead of us, I’m glad we were able to quickly find a replacement with KHL experience,” said Head Coach Rostislav Čada, “I believe Marek will help us to fulfil the goals we’ve set ourselves.”

The robust 25-year-old defenseman – 186cm (6’1”), 100kg (220lb) – started his career in his home town of Ústí nad Labem. He played just one season for HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi, then played youth hockey in Litvinov and Kladno. As a 17-year-old, he then made four appearances for Kladno in the top Czech division. From Kladno he moved on to Liberec, where he spent two very successful seasons. Scoring 14 points from 52 games in the 2010/11 season, the next year he was a teammate of our captain Milan Bartovič, 28 points making him the most productive defenseman in the Tipsport Extraliga, with the highest number of assists. Capped by the Czech national team 13 times, his qualities did not go unnoticed by the KHL, and in the summer of 2012 Yugra Khanty sought him out. Trončinský didn’t get lost in Siberia, notching up 23 points in 52 games. The current season has been even better for the left defenseman, his 14 points making him the most productive back in the team, and placing him in the top 25 backs in the whole competition!

We welcome Marek Trončinský to HC Slovan Bratislava, and trust he will establish the same exceptional productivity he has found in his previous teams.
