Dynamo came at Slovan right from the start, but it was Bližňák who made headway after a defensive error, bearing down on the returning Yeryomenko, but the Dynamo goalie managed to block with the pads. Janus was in action in the 5th minute, making the catch from a clear chance for Babenko. The home team almost conceded while shorthanded thanks to Ryazantsev’s foul, but Yeryomenko again had other ideas. Dynamo made the most of their own powerplay, however – Pestunov patiently awaited Volkov’s pass in front of goal, and beat Janus at the second attempt – 1:0. A Marko Daňo slapshot in the 17th was the closest Slovan came, but Yeryomenko’s shoulder kept it out.
In the 24th minute, Tomáš Mikúš ploughed his way towards goal, but defense verging on a foul stopped him from scoring. Three minutes later, a powerplay brought Slovan the equalizer. Miklík brought the puck forward from defense, swept into the attacking zone and let fly a killer blow – 1:1. Half-way through the game, Dugin shot from a good angle, but straight at Janus. The hosts began to apply real pressure, Karsums and Komarov both missing out with good chances, and Janus had to pull of some fine saves while shorthanded after Šatan’s foul. Dynamo suffered a wobble at the end of the second period, as Slovan could have gone ahead in a late powerplay.
What Slovan missed out on at the end of the middle period came good in a powerplay at the start of the third – Martin Škoula’s shot found its way past Yeryomenko into the net – 1:2. Dynamo then failed to make anything of their own powerplay, from which Šatan stole away with the puck, sent Yeryomenko the wrong way, and slotted into the empty net - 1:3. The home team created immense pressure in the 53rd minute, resulting in a defensive error, which Dugin punished to pull a goal back – 2:3. Slovan made little from a five-on-three powerplay late on, even allowing Dynamo a shot from a breakaway, but sound defense right to the end ensured Slovan took all three points from the KHL leaders!
Rostislav Čada: Today our good movement enabled us to hold the very strong Dynamo team on center ice. We didn’t allow them to apply continuous pressure in our defensive zone. We scored two goals in powerplays, and the deciding goal came when we were shorthanded. Out first win here in Moscow against Dynamo means a lot to us.
