Following Monday’s press conference, held by Hockey Operations VP Vladimir Shalaev, the KHL has published the entire match calendar for the Regular Season 2013/2014.
The schedule did not come about easily; many factors had to be taken into account, for example geographical location, the Winter Olympics in Sochi, and the multi-purpose use of the arenas in many cities.
In the 2013/2014 regular season, all teams will play one another twice, once home, once on the road. Despite the addition of Zagreb and Vladivostok to the league, each team will play 54 games – the same number as last season. This season sees the removal of the “twins” system, where certain teams played each other four times, twice home, twice away.
The opening game of the new KHL season takes place on September 4th, when Gagarin Cup holders Dynamo Moscow take on Traktor Chelyabinsk. Saturday, September 7th will be a day without hockey: The league will pay tribute to the players and staff of Lokomotiv Jaroslavl who tragically lost their lives in the air crash in 2011. On that day, Slovak hockey lost Pavol Demitra. The regular season will conclude on March 4th, with the playoffs (conference quarter-finals) beginning March 7th (West) and March 8th (East); the semi-finals start March 20th (West) and March 21st (East); the conference finals begin on April 2nd (West) and April 3rd (East); the Gagarin Cup finals start on April 18th. All playoffs will be decided on the first to four wins, with the new champion being decided no later than April 30th 2014.
HC SLOVAN Bratislava, playing their second season in the highest league on the old continent, will play in the West conference – Bobrov division (Dynamo Minsk, Dynamo Riga, Lev Praha, Donbass Donetsk, Medveščak Zagreb, SKA Petrograd). The campaign gets underway with a string of four games away from home. Our first game is in Donetsk (Sept. 6th), followed by Spartak Moscow (Sept. 8th) and Dynamo Minsk (Sept. 10th). The testing road trip concludes on the ice of KHL newcomer Medveščak Zagreb (Sept. 13th).
HC SLOVAN’s first game in the SLOVNAFT Arena takes place on September 17th at 19.00, against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. In September we also host Vityaz Podolsk, Ak Bars Kazan, and Gagarin Cup holders Dynamo Moscow. October sees a long series of home games for Čada’s charges, with six games at the SLOVNAFT Arena in the space of twelve days.
