Slovan made a catastrophic start to the duel, as Belousov centred the puck from the corner, and the prostrate Barker sent the puck past Brust inside 30 seconds - 0:1. In the 7th minute, Lada defenceman Romanov shot from the blue line, and his strike also beat Brust - 0:2. Thus the Canadian netminder headed for the bench and made way for fellow countryman Garnett. The Sky Blues twice committed the blunder of too many players on the ice, although they did not concede in either resulting powerplay. Lušňák did have a chance for Slovan late in the period, but was unable to hit the open goal.
Even putting on pressure during their own penalty kill counted for nothing, as they again conceded an unfortunate third when even-handed. Bocharov shot from the blue line, and the puck skidded along Garnett's right pad into the net - 0:3. His post offered better fortune, saving Slovan from a fourth in the 37th minute. But the visitors still had time to find the net before the siren, when Zatyovich found the top corner from the left circle.
In the final period, Slovan was unable to make anything of the pressure they exerted on Masalskis's goalmouth. They did eventually pull one back in the 47th minute, as Skalický forced the puck over the line - 1:4, but Lada reasserted their four-goal just miuntes later through Krysanov - 1:5. Slovan defenceman Luža did at least have a personal triumph, knocking in his first KHL goal in the 53rd minute - 2:5, but that was to be all for Slovan on a disappointing night.
