It was the Sky Blues' fourth line that provided the early excitement, putting pressure on the visitors. A shot from Sersen rebounded to Lušňák, but he couldn't quite make it. In the 7th minute, Surový's efforts made a great chance for Miklík, but Kovář - the away team's Czech netminder - was well-prepared. The biggest chance of the first period fell to Avtomobilist, after a misunderstanding between Brusta and Mihálik. But the most recent goalie of the week made up for his hesitation with his right pad in the right place. He used his mitt too, cutting off a dead cert from Shchemerov after Koukal picked him out.
The middle act showed a lower activity rate from the hosts, who then gave up a penalty for too many players on the ice. Play was disjointed, and Slovan also defended a five-on-three powerplay, but no sooner had they managed that feat, they conceded a goal from Elo - 0:1. Miloš Říha's charges set off in search of an equaliser. First Tičar edged Šťastný's shot just over the bar, but what didn't come off for the Slovene, worked out for Nedorost in the 31st minute, deflecting an effort from the blue line past Kovář - 1:1. Slovan then had their own five-on-three powerplay advantage, but the Yekaterinburg denied four efforts from the Sky Blues, ensuring parity remained at the siren.
The hosts took the lead again early in the third period. In the 42nd minute, Vasilevsky provided the killer blow from Koukal's pass - 1:2. But Slovan did not lay down their arms. On the contrary, six minutes later, Jeglič and Šťastný outmanoevred the Avtomobilist defence and the latter converted for 2:2. In the 53rd, a shot from Bartovič was too good for Kovář, and Slovan looked to be heading for all three points. Alas, in the last minute of regulation time, Golyshev made a powerplay count, and sent the game into overtime. The game was eventually decided on penalty shots, where only Jeglič and Kašpar hit the target, giving the Sky Blues two points.
